Actifed Decongestant Syrup 100ml — Triprolidine & Pseudoephedrine

Actifed Decongestant Syrup is a pharmacy combination medicine used to relieve nasal and sinus congestion associated with colds, flu, hayfever and upper respiratory tract infections. It contains two active ingredients: pseudoephedrine (a nasal decongestant that shrinks swollen nasal blood vessels to clear a blocked nose) and triprolidine (an antihistamine that reduces runny nose, sneezing and allergic symptoms).

The liquid syrup format makes it easier to measure precise doses and is a practical option for those who prefer liquid medicines. One of the longest-standing combination decongestant products in Irish pharmacies.

What Actifed Decongestant Syrup Treats

  • Blocked nose — pseudoephedrine shrinks swollen nasal blood vessels for rapid decongestion
  • Runny nose and sneezing — triprolidine antihistamine reduces rhinorrhoea and sneezing
  • Sinus congestion and pressure — helps clear blocked sinuses associated with cold and flu
  • Hayfever nasal symptoms — antihistamine component reduces allergic nasal symptoms
  • Upper respiratory tract infection symptoms — combination relief for cold and flu congestion

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pseudoephedrine and how does it work as a decongestant?

Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic decongestant — it acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the lining of the nasal passages, causing the swollen blood vessels to constrict. This reduces mucosal swelling and opens the nasal airways. It is one of the most effective oral nasal decongestants available, acting systemically rather than locally (unlike nasal decongestant sprays such as xylometazoline). Because it works throughout the body, it can raise blood pressure and should be avoided by those with cardiovascular conditions.

Is Actifed safe for people with high blood pressure?

No. Pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure and is contraindicated in people with hypertension, heart disease or those taking blood pressure medication. If you have high blood pressure or any cardiovascular condition, speak with your pharmacist or GP before using Actifed or any product containing pseudoephedrine. Alternative decongestant options (such as topical nasal sprays) may be more appropriate.

Can I buy Actifed Decongestant Syrup online in Ireland?

Yes. Actifed Decongestant Syrup is available from Chemco Pharmacy online. As a pharmacy medicine containing pseudoephedrine, it is dispensed from the pharmacy. Our team will review your order before dispatch to ensure the product is appropriate for you.

Is Actifed better than a nasal decongestant spray?

They work in different ways. Nasal decongestant sprays (such as xylometazoline) act directly on the nasal lining — very fast onset, no systemic effects, but limited to 3–5 days use to avoid rebound congestion. Actifed acts orally and systemically — takes 30–60 minutes to work, acts on both nose and sinuses, and can be used for up to 7 days. Actifed may also cause cardiovascular side effects. For people with blocked sinuses as well as a blocked nose, an oral decongestant is often more effective. For those who are otherwise healthy with straightforward nasal congestion, a topical spray is often the preferred pharmacist recommendation for short-term use.
