Why Roisin's clinical perspective is unique Very few pharmacists in Ireland combine front-line community pharmacy practice with the experience of co-developing and bringing a gut health product to market. Roisin works directly with hospitals, fitness professionals and patients living with IBS, IBD and other functional digestive conditions — and that clinical contact shapes every product she recommends. When Roisin recommends SylliFlor®, it is the same product she co-developed with her father Pat after years of seeing patients struggle with gritty, unpalatable fibre supplements. When she recommends Alflorex or Optibac, it is informed by what she sees working in real practice. The recommendations on this page are consistent with how she advises every patient who walks into the pharmacy.

Roisin's Story

I studied pharmacy at Trinity College Dublin and have spent over a decade in clinical practice — but my interest in gut health did not come from a textbook. It came from listening. Every day in pharmacy I would meet patients with IBS, with bloating they could not explain, with mums-to-be unable to manage pregnancy constipation, and with people whose lives were quietly restricted by digestive symptoms they did not feel they could talk about.

What I kept seeing was the same gap: people knew fibre and probiotics mattered, but the products available were either gritty and difficult to take, or were not tailored to the kind of conditions I was seeing in clinic. That is what led me, alongside my father Pat, to co-found RoCa Healthcare. Pat has worked in nutrition for over thirty years — from just outside Thurles in Tipperary — and was the driving force behind the science and the formulation work. Together we built SylliFlor® — a psyllium husk fibre supplement designed to actually taste good and to support the conditions I was treating in pharmacy: IBS, constipation, bloating and gut lining health.

I work closely with hospitals, healthcare professionals and the fitness industry, because gut health touches everything: pelvic floor recovery after birth, energy levels in athletes, immune resilience in children going back to school, and quality of life in patients with IBD. I regularly speak at wellness events and clinical conferences — covering IBS, IBD, bloating, constipation in pregnancy, postnatal recovery and gut lining protection — and I try to make complex health topics accessible and practical, not jargon-heavy.

Outside the pharmacy I spend part of the year as a ski instructor in the Swiss Alps. It might sound like a different world, but it feeds the same approach to my work — balance, energy, the connection between physical movement and digestive health, and the value of taking the time to slow down and reset. That is what I try to bring to every patient consultation at Chemco: science, patience and practical advice you can actually use.

Roisin's Top 7 Pharmacist-Recommended Picks

1

SylliFlor® Psyllium Husk — Vanilla 250g

My bestseller and a product I co-developed with my father Pat. Pure psyllium husk fibre with a natural vanilla flavour — designed to actually taste good. Soluble fibre forms a gel in the gut that supports bowel regularity, feeds the microbiome and helps with both constipation and loose stools. I recommend two teaspoons daily, sprinkled on porridge or stirred into a smoothie, with at least 250ml of water afterwards. Results typically within four to five days.

2

SylliFlor® Psyllium Husk — Cocoa 250g

The same psyllium husk fibre in a natural cocoa flavour — for patients who prefer a chocolate profile or who like to add it into hot porridge or hot drinks. Many of my patients alternate between Vanilla and Cocoa to avoid flavour fatigue, which improves long-term adherence. Vegan, gluten-free, no added sugar.

Alflorex® Dual Action Probiotic & Fibre 30 Capsules

Alflorex® contains the clinically studied Bifidobacterium longum 35624 strain — the most evidence-backed probiotic for IBS in Ireland. The Dual Action format adds a soluble fibre to the same capsule, which is exactly the pairing I recommend in clinic. Probiotics need fibre to thrive — think of probiotics as the seeds and fibre as the soil they grow in. One capsule daily, and patients often see real change within four to eight weeks.

4

Alflorex® Probiotic — 3 Month Supply

For IBS, gut symptoms rarely resolve in two weeks — sustained use of the right strain is what makes the difference. The three-month supply is what I recommend to most IBS patients starting Alflorex, because clinical trials show benefits build over time and adherence is much better at this duration. Better value than buying three separate packs.

5

FabU Gut Culture — Probiotic, Prebiotic & Postbiotic 60 Capsules

An Irish-developed daily gut supplement combining probiotic strains with the prebiotic fibre that feeds them and the postbiotic metabolites that calm the gut lining. A good alternative for patients who want a single capsule daily covering all three components — and for those building a longer-term daily gut-health routine rather than treating an acute IBS flare.

6

Active Iron® for Women 60 Capsules

Iron supplementation is one of the most commonly needed — and most commonly poorly tolerated — interventions in women's health. The gentler formulation in Active Iron is far better tolerated in patients prone to nausea or constipation, which matters because pregnancy iron tablets are often abandoned for those exact side effects. I recommend pairing it with SylliFlor where constipation is an issue, and continuing it through postnatal recovery where appropriate.

Colpermin® IBS Relief Peppermint Oil Capsules

For IBS abdominal pain and cramping, peppermint oil capsules have strong clinical evidence behind them — they act as a smooth muscle relaxant on the gut. I use Colpermin alongside SylliFlor and Alflorex as a complete IBS toolkit: SylliFlor regulates bowel habits, Alflorex addresses the microbiome and Colpermin addresses the pain and spasm. Take one capsule 15–30 minutes before meals during a flare.

Recognised by clinical specialists SylliFlor® is recommended by the Clinical Specialist Physiotherapy team at St Luke's Oncology Hospital, Dublin, to support patients managing radiation-induced diarrhoea and bowel urgency after pelvic radiotherapy. The same clinical principles that help oncology patients — water absorption, gel formation, stool consistency support — also help patients with IBS-D, IBD and exercise-induced bowel urgency.
