A small stocky perennial herb, up to 25cm high, with much branched hairy stem, half spreading or creeping. The whole plant has an apple like scent. Native to southern and western Europe; naturalised in North America. Cultivated in England, Belgium, Hungry, United States, Italy and France. The flowers are used and the oil is extracted by steam distillation.


This herb has had a medical reputation in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean region for over 2000 years, and is still in widespread use. It was used by the ancient Egyptians and the Moors, and it was one of the Saxons nine sacred herbs, which they called Ä?żË?maythenÄ?żË? (which is Chamomile). It was also held to be the plants physician since it promoted the health of plants nearby. It is currant in the British pharmacopeia for the treatment of dyspepsia, nausea, anorexia, vomiting in pregnancy, dysmenorrhoea and specifically for flatulent dyspepsia associated with mental stress
